Football fans are a fierce bunch and rivalries are extremely important to supporters, so it’s certainly going to rub fans up the wrong way if the stadium adorns the colours of your arch-rivals.
That was what Preston North End fans had to deal with at Deepdale, with 888Sport banners carrying the tangerine colours usually attributed to fierce rivals Blackpool. Fortunately for the supporters, the sponsors were happy to listen to their complaints.
888Sport launched a petition to the supporters, promising to replace the banners if 1,000 fans penned their names. The supporters reacted in force, with it taking under an hour to reach the target.
Yesterday, Deepdale underwent it’s latest changes, with a helping hand from former striker Neil Mellor and current forward Paul Gallagher, with all of the tangerine branding ousted from the stadium- ready for this weekend’s hosting of Blackburn Rovers.
Mellor, who immortalised himself in the eyes of Preston fans with 38 goals in 151 appearances, was thrilled with the changes and praised 888Sport for their willingness to listen to supporters:
“Like the Preston North End fans, I wasn’t too sure about the tangerine around the stadium, and I’m delighted that something is being done about it – so much so that I got stuck in and helped out myself! It’s great to see 888sport listen to the supporters, for a sponsor to be so proactive and take a fans first approach like this is superb.”
Neil Mellor helped 888sport remove the final traces of tangerine from Deepdale following a #FansFirst vote. Preston North End are a best price of 8/1 to beat Rovers on Saturday. Bet now at 888sport.com
