Whilst defending champions Leicester City struggle in the Premier League, the Foxes secured their passage through to the Round of 16 in the Champions League with one game to spare- securing top-spot of their group in the process.
Despite suffering a 5-0 defeat this evening, Leicester’s dream continues in the latter stages of Europe’s elite competition and the fact they finished top hands the Foxes a strong chance of reaching the quarter-finals, depending on who they get in Monday’s draw.
Claudio Ranieri’s side managed to avoid most of the big guns by topping their group but there is still some big sides to avoid and we’ve got the lowdown on all their potential opponents here.
Arsenal didn’t do Leicester City a favour by topping their Champions League group, as it gives Leicester City the possibility of facing French giants Paris Saint-Germain. Unai Emery’s side have struggled this term, particularly domestically, but you’d still fancy their chances of overcoming Leicester.
Whilst the Foxes wouldn’t turn down a glamour tie, there is larger sides they would rather face if they had to be handed a difficult draw.
The sort of tie Leicester City would fancy their chances of emerging successful in, Benfica edged into the latter stages ahead of Besiktas- despite winning just two of their Champions League matches, both of which came against Dynamo Kiev.
The Portuguese side do have European pedigree historically but Claudio Ranieri’s side would have a strong chance of securing a win.
One of the big guns to look out for amongst the unseeded teams, Bayern Munich finished second behind Atletico Madrid- although they did beat Diego Simeone’s side on the final matchday. Whilst a shock defeat to FC Rostov exposed their vulnerabilities, Bayern would be favourites if they drew Leicester.
The Bavarian outfit are one of the biggest sides in Europe and this is the sort of glamour tie that Leicester City would take, although it would likely lead to an end to their adventure on the continent.
A potentially tricky tie for Leicester City, Bayer Leverkusen have already overcome English opposition this season in Tottenham Hotspur. With a clash with Leverkusen being a big game and not as glamourous as other ties, the German outfit are potentially the side Claudio Ranieri’s side want to avoid most.
With a wealth of talented players, Leverkusen should not be taken lightly and the German side would certainly fancy their chances against Leicester.
The biggest glamour tie of them all would certainly see Leicester City clash with defending champions Real Madrid, who finished second in their group behind Borussia Dortmund following a 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu this evening.
Leicester would certainly love the chance to come toe-to-toe with the finest players in world football but, having shipped five against Porto tonight, they’d likely suffer a huge defeat.
Europa League winners for the past three seasons, Sevilla sealed their place in the knock-out rounds ahead of Lyon this evening and would present a stern test to Leicester. Whilst the Foxes would fancy their chances, the calibre of the Spanish side would likely see them through.
Like Bayer Leverkusen, it’s one to avoid for Claudio Ranieri’s men as it would be a difficult match to overcome and not the glamour tie the Foxes crave.
