Tottenham Hotspur face a challenge to keep Toby Alderweireld on their books after a contract leak revealed he has a £25m release clause, as published by Belgian outlet Le Soir.
The Belgian paper claim to have got hold of a number of footballer’s contracts, including Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, and the news of such a low release clause in Alderweireld’s contract with Spurs will have supporters extremely worried.
Since signing for Spurs in 2015 from Atletico Madrid, having spent a successful season on-loan with Southampton, Alderweireld has become a key-part of Mauricio Pochettino’s side and has helped the North London side fight back into the Champions League.
However, the 27-year-old could be snapped up for a minimum fee due to the release clause and Spurs early exit from the Champions League will increase speculation- especially as Spurs are struggling to force their way into the Premier League’s top-four this season.
Losing Alderweireld would be a bitter blow to Spurs but it’s not yet known if the contract is genuine, with it being unlikely the club will make a statement on the matter.
