Chelsea will have to part with as much as £50m if they are to sign young defender Alessio Romagnoli from AC Milan, The Sun reports.
The 21-year-old, who earned his international debut for Italy last week in a 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw with Spain, tops Antonio Conte’s wish-list at Stamford Bridge- despite the Italian splashing £34m in the summer to bring David Luiz back to the club from Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea have targeted Romagnoli since spring, in anticipation of Conte’s arrival in West London, but had several bids turned down over the course of the summer. Despite those setbacks, the club still remain keen on capturing one of the finest defensive talents in world football.
However, AC Milan value the player extremely highly and he’s become an invaluable part of their squad since his £17m move to the San Siro from Sampdoria, making 33 appearances for the famous Serie A side last season.
He also shone last week against Spain, being declared the best player on the field by the majority of Italian news outlets following the final whistle, and is expected to push veteran trio Leonardo Bonucci, Georgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli for their first-team spots in the build-up to the World Cup in two-years time.
