Barcelona have Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin and Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich on a five-man defender wish-list, according to Spanish outlet Marca.
Bellerin, a former member of Barcelona’s youth set-up, has been heavily linked with a return to Catalonia ever since making his breakthrough into the first-team at the Emirates Stadium but Arsenal are desperate to keep hold of the youngster, keen to ensure another Cesc Fabregas situation doesn’t emerge.
Whilst Barcelona may deem Bellerin as their ideal target, they’ve also identified four other defenders across Europe to fill roles in their defensive- with Bayern Munich ace Joshua Kimmich and Valencia full-back Joao Cancelo other options the La Liga champions are considering.
Should they fail to get a young player, Barcelona will switch their attention to more senior options; in the form of Juventus’ Stephan Lichtsteiner and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Darijo Srna- although it’s likely they would be a short-term fix until another move in a few years time, perhaps returning with fresh approaches for one of the younger options they’ve identified.
Barcelona have a task ahead of them in finding successors to their ageing defence, although they already brought Lucas Digne and Samuel Umtiti to the Nou Camp this summer from Ligue 1.
Jorda Alba still has a few years ahead of him but the most concerning position seems to be right-back, despite the performances of Sergio Roberto, and Barcelona could move for a more high-profile signing in this area in the next year.
