Serie A giants Lazio are set to hand Antonio Conte and Chelsea a massive blow by penning Stefan De Vrij down to a new deal, according to Rome-based outlet Il Messagero.
The 24-year-old Dutch defender was a reported target for Antonio Conte upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge this summer, with the Italian looking to shore-up his defensive ranks for the Premier League season, but Lazio’s high demands led to the Blues looking elsewhere.
Although Chelsea may still hold some interest in the player, that could all be put to bed with a new deal for De Vrij- with it reported his release clause will be raised to €35 million in a deal that would tie the defender down to his current employers until 2021.
De Vrij has been an ever-present figure in Lazio’s Serie A campaign this term, with his side currently sitting fourth in the standings, and the aspiration for Simone Inzaghi’s side is to secure a finish in the European spots for next season.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have seen their defence look vulnerable this season and have lost to Arsenal and Liverpool this term, two sides who they’ll be battling it out with for a Champions League spot come the end of the campaign.
