Group F’s heavyweights provided some great viewing at the Signal Iduna Park. Both sides were looking to take top spot and lay down a marker for progressing as group winners.
With many stars on show the game didn’t disappoint. Dortmund’s young winger Ousmanne Dembélé was looking dangerous yet again and is a real crowd pleaser. The young Frenchman is making a real name for himself since his move from Nice in the summer. He was central to most things going forward in the first half for Dortmund and probably should have got on the score sheet himself. His performances can have you on the edge of your seat in excitement but his final ball is still a working progress.
Dortmund dominated in the first half with more than the lions share of possession and 4 times as many shots as Madrid, but it was the visitors who took the lead. Gareth Bale found Ronaldo with a lovely little back heel into the Portuguese path who slotted home into the bottom corner across the goalkeeper.
Dortmund went in search of an equaliser and shortly before half time they got it. A Guerriero free-kick was dealt with poorly by the Madrid keeper who flapped at the ball and managed to parry it straight into Aubameyang’s path who bundled home for the equaliser.
The game was much more even in the second half with both sides looking to go in front. It was Madrid who got the next goal, a short corner was whipped to the far post before being nodded back across the face of goal where Rafael Varane was waiting to tap home from close range.
Dortmund then had it all to do again and with time running out they equalised in emphatic style. A cross to the far side of the box looked destined for an acrobatic effort from Aubameyang, but the Gabon international missed his effort and the ball landed at the feet of Andre Schürle who fired a rocket of a shot into the roof of the net.
A draw was about the fair result in the end, two top sides in the competition providing some great entertainment with some of the most talented players on show. There was time for a late melee in the Madrid penalty area as Dortmund pushed for a winner, a scramble in the box come to nothing, and a brief showing of handbags at ten paces finished the passage of play.
