Competition: Serie A Date: Sunday 18th September 2016 Venue: Stadio Artemio Franchi Kick-Off: 19:45 BST
Fiorentina have no injury worries and no suspensions coming into the game.
Roma are still without Mario Rui, Antonio Rudiger and Abdullahi Nura who are all long term absentees through injury. Thomas Vermaelen is also a doubt for the trip to Florence. Both Daniele De Rossi and Emerson are suspended for the match.
Italian football will enjoy big games this weekend. Inter face Juventus in the earlier kick off of 5pm British time, and then these two giants go head to head at 7:45.
Fiorentina haven’t quite managed the heights they used to when the likes of Gabriel Batistuta lined up for the Viola, however the club is still one of Italian football’s top sides, as are Roma. One thing that does carry on from Batistuta’s days in Fiorentina, is a familiar foe by the name of Francesco Totti. One of Italian football’s greatest ever players turns 40 in two weeks time, and is still playing a big part at Roma, coming off the bench to score the winner last weekend at home to Sampdoria.
The Roma legend is an inspiration to players world wide. Most would feel the need to retire mid thirty’s, but Totti recently stated that in his current condition, why stop? It’s testament to the players commitment, to stay in shape and look after himself that he can enjoy a prolonged career at the top. A truly amazing story, and don’t be surprised if he is making more headlines at the grand old age of 40!
Both sides fell victim to severe weather last time out, but while Roma could continue their match following a brief delay, Fiorentina’s could not, and the game with Genoa was called off. The two sides also played in European competition in midweek, both earning a point each in the Europa League opening fixtures. The game is finely poised with Roma conceding goals and unable to follow up on an opening four goal victory against Udinese.
The return of midfielder Kevin Strootman is sure to provide Roma with much needed quality in the middle, but Fiorentina have the home advantage, and with a defeat, albeit an away narrow loss to Juve, and a win, they will be looking to make that home advantage count and make up for the lost game last time out.
It should make for an exciting match between the sides with a high possibility of goals at both ends.
