Date: Friday 26th August Venue: Allianz Arena Competition: Bundesliga KO: 19.30
Bayern Munich are without defenders Jerome Boateng and Holger Badstuber for this game, Javi Martinez will likely partner debutant Mats Hummels at the back.
Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery will flank Robert Lewandowski up front. New signing Renato Sanches will likely be on the bench.
Werder Bremen striker Claudio Pizarro will start against his former club as new signing Max Kruse is not fit.
Santiago Garcia and Philipp Bargfrede will also miss the game through injury.
The start of the new Bundesliga season is finally upon us and reigning champions Bayern Munich kick off proceedings at the Allianz Arena against Werder Bremen. For Bayern a home tie to start is always good especially as it is new manager Carlo Ancelotti’s first league game in charge.
Bremen have obviously a tough start but on a positive note they are getting arguably the toughest away game out of the way early on. Viktor Skrypnyk is under pressure to improve on last season’s scare with relegation. Goals from 37-year old Pizarro cannot always be relied upon to save them.
Bayern are going for their fifth straight Bundesliga title and are heavy favourites to succeed. Borussia Dortmund will provide competition as will an improving Bayer Leverkusen. As always a good start is crucial.
Expect Bayern to dominate this game from start to finish. Bremen will hope to frustrate the Bavarians and hit them on the counter-attack. Ancelotti will hope to avoid an upset in his first game in front of an expectant crowd.
Lewandowski was the Bundesliga top scorer last season with 30 goals.
Pizarro is in his third spell at Bremen.
Ancelotti will become the fourth Italian to manage in the Bundesliga.
