Competition: Premier League Date: Saturday 13th August 2016 Venue: Goodison Park Kick-Off: 15:00 BST
Everton won’t be handing Ashley Williams his debut due to the fact the Welsh international started pre-season late. However, Phil Jagielka will feature in a defence that will have to cope with John Stones’ recent departure.
Seamus Coleman and Romelu Lukaku are doubts for the Premier League opener due to their respective injury problems, whilst transfer speculation also continues to surround the latter.
Tottenham are likely to hand a debut to new signing Victor Wanyama, who will replace Mousa Dembele in Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield. The Belgian is serving the third of a six-match suspension, which has carried over from last season.
Jan Vertonghen could feature, despite picking up an injury at Euro 2016, whilst new striker Vincent Janssen may come off the bench.
After a disappointing campaign last season, Everton are under new guidance as they pinched Ronald Koeman from high-flying Southampton. The Dutchman’s decision to leave the Saints surprised many and he’s under pressure to make an impression on Merseyside, although the loss of John Stones is a big blow.
Meanwhile, Spurs will be left feeling sorry for themselves after last season when they failed to lift the title despite a tremendous campaign. A final-day slip-up against relegated Newcastle United also saw them concede runners-up spot to arch-rivals Arsenal, although the significance of that is minor.
Everton were woeful at home last season, whilst Spurs’ defence was the best in the league up until the final day, so all pointers suggest a victory for the North London side. Spurs have a great recent record against the Toffees and will be looking to extend that here.
Everton have not beaten Tottenham in seven Premier League attempts.
The last four games have seen six goals, all scored in the first-half.
Everton won just 23 points at Goodison Park last season, their worst ever tally.
Spurs have won just two of their last five opening day fixtures but are unbeaten in that run.
