Atletico were at full force during their 3-0 win over Real Sociedad at the Estadio Vicente Calderon, and move within five points of leaders Barcelona in the La Liga.
An own goal from Diego Reyes gave the hosts a halftime lead, and goals and Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann sealed a comprehensive victory at the Calderon.
Atletico took the lead on eight minutes through a Diego Reyes own goal, after a fizzed in cross towards the right post with the defender intercepting the pass into the back of the net.
Diego Godin had a terrific chance to doubling the hosts lead from the resulting corner, but he blazed his shot inches over the crossbar.
On the half hour mark, Antoine Griezmann drilled a right footed effort around the edge of the box towards the underside of the bar, forcing an alert save from goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli to concede a corner kick.
Asier Illarramendi had half a chance at the other end who unleashed a shot from 20 yards out, however, his effort went wide of the right post.
In the closing stages of the half, Sociedad keeper Rulli pulled off another fine save to keep his side in it to deny Luciano Vietto’s low drive inside the area which was heading towards the top corner.
Rojiblancos doubled their lead within a minute of the restart, with Luciano Vietto latching onto a loose pass and put a cross into the penalty area to find Saul Niguez who showed great technique to fire his shot in mid-air which flew low into the middle of the net.
Diego Simeone made his first substitution on the 55th minute, bringing on Lucas Francois Bernard Hernandez in place on Diego Godin.
On the stroke of the hour, Atletico made it 3-0 from the penalty spot after Alberto De La Bella brought down Antoine Greizmann in the penalty area, and Greizmann took the spot kick, burying his shot into the bottom right corner.
Real Sociedad nearly pulled a goal back from a free kick set piece into the area, with defender Lucas nearly heading the ball into his own net which bounced off the left post.
In the remaining quarter, Atletico nearly added their fourth after some fine intricate play from Filipe Luiz and Oliver Torres with the move finishing towards Luciano Vietto from the edge of the area who fired his shot towards the right post and was parried out for a corner.
The match ended 3-0 to seal Atletico’s ninth home win of the season and are now five points adrift of leaders Barcelona, who play Rayo Vallecano on Thursday night.
